Rhodonessa Caryophyllacea & the Pink-headed Harpy

Rhodonessa Caryophyllacea is a pink-headed duck. This particular one {above} was painted by Bhawani Das in 18th c. Calcutta. It is found in BIRDS by Katrina Cook, a gorgeously illustrated, captivatingly written and beautifully designed elephant folio that I found most unjustly relegated to the remainders in Borders. Possibly extinct, {apparently, like the Loch Ness monster, there are rumors of sightings} the last confirmed sighting in the wild of this gorgoeus oddity was in 1926. Sadly, you will be unable to stock your pond with this lovely species.

Which makes it somewhat unlike its rather more prim and plain derivative, the pink-headed wimple-wearing monocled harpy. This particular specimen can be seen below and procured for your very own here, but has most likely never actually existed in 18th c. Calcutta or anywhere else outside of my odd imaginings.
